Lydia Turner, a Fitness Trainer inspired by faith and empowering women in Texas

In a fitness industry often dominated by external validation and aesthetic-focused goals, Lydia Turner stands apart. As a certified fitness trainer and founder of Team PBM (Powerful Beyond Measure), Lydia has built a thriving community that prioritizes internal transformation alongside physical strength. Her unique approach combines performance training principles, faith-based wellness, and sisterhood to help women achieve lasting results without burnout.

I interviewed Lydia to discuss her journey from a sedentary childhood to becoming a sought-after trainer, the role faith plays in her methodology, and what it truly takes to build confidence that radiates from within.

The Unexpected Journey:
From Sedentary to Movement

Can you share a little about your journey into fitness and what inspired you to become a trainer?

"I grew up a very sedentary, overweight, more musically inclined kid, and I was always fascinated by athletes and people that were able to do amazing things physically so I knew that I wanted to study the body. At first, I didn't know what I was going to specialize in so I kind of got involved in everything fitness related. I loved teaching classes as well as helping individuals achieve results and learn how to build healthy choices."

Lydia's transformation from an inactive youth to a fitness professional showcases the power of curiosity and determination. Her diverse background in various fitness modalities - from group classes to one-on-one coaching, has given her a comprehensive understanding of what truly drives sustainable change.

When Faith Meets Fitness: A Game-Changing Perspective

What role has faith played in shaping your approach to health and performance?

"It completely changed everything for me actually. I worked in Fitness for years and although it built confidence in my physical abilities, I still lacked confidence from within. It was like I had developed so much in so much joy was added to my life, but something was still missing and that thing was Christ.

I learned I was building my body for a lot of the wrong reasons. I loved lifting heavy and doing amazing things mostly for external validation, but when I stripped it away most of the time I had no desire to do it.

So, I've been on a journey to find my love for pushing myself, being healthy because I love myself versus trying to prove it."

This honest revelation highlights a common struggle in the fitness world: the difference between working out from a place of self-love versus self-criticism. Lydia's faith-centered approach has revolutionized not only her personal practice but also how she guides her clients toward holistic wellness.

The Three Pillars of Thriving Women

What are the top three habits you see in women who thrive both in and out of the gym?

  1. The ability to stay consistent and disciplined, even when it's hard

  2. A regular routine of self-care, internally and externally

  3. Women with a strong foundation in God

These three habits form the cornerstone of Lydia's coaching philosophy. Consistency, comprehensive self-care, and spiritual grounding create a powerful trifecta that extends far beyond physical fitness into every area of life.

Preventing Burnout While Pursuing Excellence

Many high performers struggle with balance - how do you help your clients push toward their goals without burning out?

"All coaches struggle with this because we pour so much into our clients that it's hard to have energy left over for ourselves. I've hired a coach a couple of times to help with this. Also, this is why it's so important to stay grounded in my faith and to make sure that I'm filling up my cup daily."

Lydia practices what she preaches (WE LOVE THIS), recognizing that even coaches need support. Her emphasis on daily spiritual practice and self-replenishment ensures she can sustainably serve her community without depleting herself.

Discipline: The Universal Success Principle

What's one performance principle from sports training that every woman should apply in everyday life?

"Discipline. If you have the ability to show up consistently, even when you don't feel like it and learn how to show up and be flexible with all the different seasons of life, that concept will apply to every area of your life and you will see more growth and success."

Whether you're pursuing career goals, relationship health, or personal development, Lydia's emphasis on disciplined consistency offers a roadmap for success in any arena.

Motivation Beyond the Scale

How do you help women stay motivated on the hard days when results feel slow?

"I think this goes back to the importance of having a strong why. Results and the scale cannot be the only reason you work out or you will find yourself, disappointed, and unmotivated constantly to where you're most likely gonna quit and get stuck in the start stop cycle."
- Lydia Turner

This insight cuts through the noise of quick-fix fitness culture. By helping clients identify deeper motivations beyond appearance, Lydia creates lasting behavioral change that withstands the inevitable plateaus and challenges.

Doing It Afraid: Lydia's Personal Mindset

What's your personal mindset routine before you step into a big challenge, whether in business or training?

I actually am a really scared person by nature. I have just learned over the course of my life to do it afraid. I want what’s on the other side of that obstacle more than I want to stay complacent where I’m at, even though I’m scared.
— Lydia Turner

This vulnerable admission reveals the truth behind confidence: it's not the absence of fear, but the commitment to move forward despite it. Lydia's authenticity about her own struggles makes her coaching even more relatable and powerful.

Redefining Confidence and Worthiness

What do you wish more women knew about confidence, strength, and body image?

"When a person is truly confident, they know it for themselves and it's not something that they seek externally anymore. They are comfortable with being alone. They are okay with not showing everything off. I'm learning that confidence has a direct tie to worthiness. A lot of women aren't confident because they don't feel worthy. They don't feel worthy of good things. And they are searching for their place in the world. The crazy part of it is that they don't even find Home within themselves. That sense of belonging, warmth, and wholeness can only come from God."

This profound perspective shifts the conversation from surface-level body positivity to deep-rooted self-worth. Lydia connects true confidence to spiritual wholeness, offering a path to authentic self-acceptance that transcends physical appearance.

The Power of Community

Community is a huge part of performance - what role does sisterhood/teamwork play in your programs?

"I'm actually shifting my entire training program currently to center around a community group because community has been the best part of my business. Thus far it's the heart of my business. Actually, I host a group of women who all want to improve and I plan events for them and I curate a space for them to Walk this journey through together. That's every client's favorite part about coaching with me."

The decision to restructure her entire business model around community speaks volumes about what Lydia has observed works. Women thrive when they feel supported, understood, and connected to others on similar journeys.

“Treat every healthy meal and every workout as an act of self-care telling yourself you're doing this because you love yourself not because you hate yourself."

Loving Your Body While Loving Yourself

What advice would you give to women who want to strengthen their bodies but not give into their body image concerns?

"There's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting a great body and loving cute workout clothes, but that cannot be the entirety of wellness for you. The more you focus on how you look and how others perceive you the more lost you'll become focused on how you feel and focus on training your mind and your body to be disciplined to be strong and to be resilient.”

This balanced approach validates aesthetic goals while redirecting focus toward functional strength, mental resilience, and self-compassion. It's wellness from a place of abundance rather than scarcity.

Getting Personal:
Lydia's Favorite Things

What's your go-to workout when you need a quick energy boost?

"Step aerobics! I started stepping a few years ago with extreme hip-hop step and it is my favorite, most quick and easy form of cardio to get me sweating and conditioned."

Favorite post-workout meal or recovery ritual?

"I'm actually horrible with recovery, but I am a big advocate for sleep! I love to sleep as much as possible. I love to get Chipotle or Cava."

If you could give your younger self one piece of advice about faith, fitness, or performance, what would it be?

"I wouldn't change anything about my life. But if I could tell myself one thing it would be that all of the things that I did not like about myself because of people's opinion end up being the very things that gave me an extra extraordinary life. Be authentic. Loudly."

This final piece of wisdom encapsulates Lydia's entire philosophy: authentic self-expression, rooted in faith and self-love, creates an extraordinary life.
